Consequences and Implications of Immigration on Criminal Law in Plural Societies: A Focus on Female Genital Mutilations

In this paper, the author analyzes the main implications of immigration on the criminal law systems in Western countries, with particular attention for the problematic matter of culturally motivated crimes in Italy and Europe. After a brief explanation of the main models of integration adopted in Europe (also known as assimilationist and multiculturalist models), the author will focus upon the case of the Italian criminal system facing culturally oriented crimes. Within this macro-category of criminal activities, special attention will be given to female genital mutilations, as an exemplary case of cultural felony.
